What NinjaTrader Trade Performance Does
The Desktop Trade Performance window creates customizable reports from account trade history. Use it to investigate what happened: which trades contributed to results, whether expenses changed the outcome, and where execution records need checking.
NinjaTrader Trade Performance and Strategy Analyzer answer different questions. The former reviews account history; Strategy Analyzer tests NinjaScript strategies using historical analysis, including backtesting and optimization. See our Strategy Analyzer guide for that workflow.
Start with a narrow question: did a particular setup remain positive after costs during the selected period? Recording the question before examining the numbers reduces the temptation to search for whichever filter produces the most attractive result.
How to Generate a NinjaTrader Trade Performance Report
- Open the window from the Control Center’s New menu.
- Choose the From and To dates.
- Click Generate.
- Expand the filter panel and select accounts, instruments, and ATM templates.
- Choose your display and units: currency, percent, points, pips, or ticks.
- Generate again after changing dates or adding new trades.
The official report instructions note that changing dates and generating can reselect previously excluded filter items. Recheck them every time. Filtering operates at execution level.
For a clean NinjaTrader Trade Performance comparison, keep simulated and live accounts separate. Record the exact contract, date range, and position size. Comparing a micro contract with a standard contract in dollars can obscure differences in exposure.
Save a dated copy before changing your review criteria. A result that improves only after excluding inconvenient days deserves further investigation.
Choose the Right Report View
NinjaTrader Trade Performance offers six displays. The display documentation explains their fields and matching behavior.
| View | Contents | Useful review question |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Aggregate statistics. | What deserves closer investigation? |
| Analysis | Charts and grouped results. | Are results concentrated in one period? |
| Executions | Individual fills. | Does the record match the broker? |
| Trades | Matched entries and exits. | Which completed trades explain the total? |
| Orders | Order records. | Which orders need investigating? |
| Journal | Notes attached to activity. | What was the context? |
Begin with Summary, then inspect Trades and Executions. A headline number is easier to trust when you can explain the records behind it. Window Properties also let you adjust display formatting and available column settings.

Configure Commissions Before Evaluating Results
Commission settings matter in NinjaTrader Trade Performance. NinjaTrader supports commission templates for simulation and live accounts; do not assume a zero displayed charge means free execution.
- Review the template’s instrument-specific and instrument-type rates.
- Confirm whether the entered amount represents one side of the transaction.
- In Accounts, right-click the account and choose Edit Account.
- Select the template in Commission, then click OK.
- Compare a completed trade against the expected entry-plus-exit expense.
Official documentation explains rate precedence and per-side charges and assigning templates to accounts. Playback101 inherits commission settings from Sim101.
Use the futures commission calculator for a separate expense estimate. Reconcile live charges with brokerage statements, and avoid subtracting commissions twice when the reported result already includes them.
NinjaTrader Trade Performance Metrics Explained
Read related statistics together. The official definitions establish how NinjaTrader calculates each measure.
| Metric | Meaning | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Total net profit | Combined trade profits and losses. | Verify the cost basis and sample. |
| Profit factor | Gross profit divided by the magnitude of gross loss. | A high value from few trades is fragile evidence. |
| Percent profitable | Profitable trades divided by total trades. | Compare with average win and loss. |
| Average trade | Currency net profit divided by trade count. | Small margins are sensitive to costs. |
| Maximum drawdown | Largest peak-to-trough decline in realized performance. | It does not describe every intratrade loss. |
| MAE / MFE | Adverse / favorable movement during trades. | Review excursions alongside exit decisions. |
In NinjaTrader Trade Performance, display units and quantity can change interpretation. Check the P&L calculation modes before treating a points value as a per-contract figure. Currency conversion can also matter.
MAE and MFE depend on available data and calculation context. They are not supported for server-side Trade Performance in the current Desktop help documentation. Missing observations should not be interpreted as evidence of zero adverse movement.
Worked Example: Twenty Trades After Costs
Use this hypothetical example to sanity-check a NinjaTrader Trade Performance review. Assume twenty completed one-contract trades: ten earn $100 each before costs, and ten lose $80 each. Apply a modeled $4 round-trip expense per trade, covering entry and exit combined. This is an illustration, not a quoted NinjaTrader rate.
| Calculation | Before modeled costs | After modeled costs |
|---|---|---|
| Winning trades total | $1,000 | $960 |
| Losing trades total, magnitude | $800 | $840 |
| Net result | $200 | $120 |
| Average per trade | $10 | $6 |
| Win rate | 50% | 50% |
| Profit factor | 1.25 | 1.14, rounded |
The $80 total expense reduces the original result by 40%. The win rate stays unchanged here because no winner becomes a loser. Other samples can behave differently. Our trading expectancy calculator helps explore the relationship between win rate, payoff, and costs.
Drawdown depends on sequence
Consider a separate cumulative closed-trade P&L sequence: $0, $120, $40, $160, $70, $200. Its largest decline is $90, from $160 to $70. Winner and loser totals alone cannot reveal that path.
A NinjaTrader Trade Performance drawdown should not be substituted for an evaluation provider’s rule. Such rules may include unrealized equity or different reset conditions; review the relevant terms and our prop firm drawdown calculator.

Simulation, Live Trading and Backtests
NinjaTrader Trade Performance reports are meaningful only in context. NinjaTrader documents differences between historical, simulated, and live executions. Fill assumptions and market conditions can produce different outcomes.
- Simulation: useful for learning procedures and observing rule adherence; inspect the cost assumptions.
- Live history: inspect actual recorded fills and reconcile charges against account statements.
- Backtesting: evaluate historical assumptions and avoid treating modeled fills as executable promises.
Actual fill-based P&L already reflects actual entry and exit prices. Do not subtract an estimated slippage charge again for a price difference already present in those fills. For a model, document which execution frictions remain excluded.
Keep strategy versions separate. Changing entry rules, contract size, and stop logic simultaneously makes attribution difficult. Choose a review period in advance, record changes, and reserve later observations to examine whether the apparent improvement persists.
Export NinjaTrader Trade Performance and Review Weekly
Right-click a supported data grid and choose Export to save CSV or Excel data, as described in the data-grid guide. Keep the original export unchanged and analyze a copy.
For each NinjaTrader Trade Performance export, record account, contract, date range, units, and commission assumptions. Preserve available execution identifiers and timestamps so you can trace unusual entries. Check imported dates and decimal separators before calculating totals in a spreadsheet.
The native Journal supports notes attached to executions or trades through Add Journal Entry. For a broader workflow, compare the options in our futures trading journals guide.
A practical weekly routine
- Reconcile: investigate missing fills and unexpected costs.
- Separate: review consistent accounts, setups, and position sizes.
- Inspect: identify how much the largest winner contributed.
- Explain: attach market context and rule-adherence notes.
- Decide: define one change to investigate in simulation.
When comparing fixed exits with a NinjaTrader trailing stop, keep the entry rules consistent. Review both missed favorable movement and losses; selecting only trades where trailing helped creates an incomplete picture.
Use NinjaTrader Trade Performance as the record behind a written explanation. A useful review ends with a specific question for the next sample, not a promise to recover losses.
A practical review log contains four fields: the question, the fixed sample, the observation, and the next action. For example: “Did late entries account for most losses this week?” Keep the complete sample, mark which entries met your written definition of late, and compare their costs and outcomes. Treat a small difference as a reason to collect more observations. Do not rewrite the definition after seeing which trades lost. This makes a NinjaTrader Trade Performance review easier to repeat and easier to challenge when later evidence disagrees.

NinjaTrader Trade Performance Troubleshooting
- Unexpected accounts: recheck filters after regenerating a different date range.
- Earlier trades: the report can include activity before From to reconstruct a position from the last flat state.
- Missing fills: some connections do not supply all historical executions, including activity during disconnection.
- Unexpected trade count: scaling in or out can create separate matched trades.
- Zero commissions: verify the assigned account template and applicable instrument rates.
- Unexpected P&L: check quantity, units, currency conversion, and costs before editing records.
Multiple NinjaScript strategies sharing an account can produce account-level trade matching that ignores strategy ownership. For individual strategy performance, use the Strategies tab’s strategy-specific reporting.
Before manually changing history, preserve records and compare broker statements. If an execution is missing, establish its identity and source first. Blindly adding or deleting fills can turn a recoverable discrepancy into a misleading report.
Costs, Use Cases and Limitations
NinjaTrader Trade Performance fits traders who want to review Desktop account activity and connect summary statistics to individual trades. It is especially useful for checking simulated workflows, investigating cost sensitivity, and documenting execution differences.
Advantages: account records, multiple report views, configurable presentation, and export support provide a practical starting point. Limitations: incomplete history, mismatched filters, and inconsistent assumptions can undermine the interpretation. A specialist journal may better suit particular tagging or multi-platform requirements; verify its supported imports before subscribing.
Choose additional software around a concrete gap in your current routine. If the problem is missing explanations, establish a consistent note template first. If the problem is combining several platforms, test a small import and reconcile it before committing to a service. Check how the service handles partial exits, duplicate imports, contract names, and time zones. Your NinjaTrader Trade Performance export provides a useful comparison file, but matching headline profit alone is insufficient: verify trade count and several individual records too.
Separate analysis from the cost of trading. Consult current NinjaTrader pricing for plan and execution charges. A plan with no monthly platform subscription does not eliminate commissions or applicable exchange, regulatory, and market-data fees. Optional journal services may add subscriptions.

NinjaTrader Trade Performance FAQ
Why does the report differ from my broker statement?
Check missing executions, commission assumptions, selected accounts, and reporting periods. Reconcile individual fills before comparing totals; the report is not a replacement for your broker’s statement.
Does NinjaTrader Trade Performance include open-position risk?
Its realized drawdown statistic does not capture every unrealized fluctuation. Monitor open positions separately and distinguish closed-trade analysis from any account equity rule you must follow.
Is a high profit factor enough to approve a strategy?
No. Inspect the sample size, costs, drawdown, outlier dependence, and consistency across additional observations. A strong historical ratio can deteriorate under different conditions.
Can I export results to a spreadsheet?
Yes. Supported grids provide CSV or Excel export. Verify imported numbers and preserve the original file before adding formulas or annotations.
Why did my results change after selecting new dates?
The sample changed, and previously excluded filters may have been reselected. Review the account and instrument selections before interpreting the difference.
Final Verdict
NinjaTrader Trade Performance is most useful when treated as an investigation tool. Start with complete records, verify filters and commissions, and connect every headline metric to the trades behind it. Keep simulated, backtested, and live evidence clearly identified.
A consistent review process can reveal mistakes and sharpen questions. It cannot remove market uncertainty or turn a small favorable sample into a reliable forecast.
